Hunter Pence's two-run first inning home run off James Shields last night provided the San Francisco Giants with all the offense they needed in their 7-1 win in Game 1 of the 110th World Series.
Kansas City tries to tie the series up tonight in Game 2. Yordano Ventura takes the mound for the Royals against Giants' right-hander Jake Peavy.
Peavy is (1-0) in two postseason starts so far this Fall, with a 1.86 ERA, 5.30 FIP, six walks (5.59 BB/9) and five Ks (4.66 K/9) in 9 ⅔ IP. Ventura has put up a 4.85 ERA, a 4.82 FIP, four walks (2.77 BB/9) and eight Ks (5.54 K/9) in 13 IP.
Though Ventura left his last outing with a shoulder issue, Royals' skipper Ned Yost told reporters that the 23-year-old right-hander was ready for tonight's start.
"His side sessions have been absolutely dynamite," Yost said..
"He's a kid with tremendous composure. He's a tremendous competitor, even for as young as he is. I can't recall too many pitchers in my career that have his type of composure, his type of confidence, and his type of stuff at that young an age.
"So we're really confident that he's going to come out and pitch a great game."
