The Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals go at it in Grapefruit League action this afternoon live from Viera, Florida's Space Coast Stadium. Stephen Strasburg takes the hill for the second time this spring against Cards' right-hander Joe Kelly in today's 1:05 pm EDT game which is available on tv on MASN and the MLB Network and on the radio on WFED 1500 AM and 106.7 the FAN in D.C. (and on MLB.com's Gameday audio as well).
Strasburg, 25, makes his second start of the spring coming off a 15-pitch, two-inning outing the first time out last week against the Braves in which he allowed just one hit. Manager Matt Williams told reporters the right-hander could have easily thrown more, but was limited in his first Grapefruit League start. Even though he threw just 15 pitches, Strasburg was able to work in the slider he's been working on this spring, striking Braves' outfielder B.J. Upton out with the pitch he's added to try to keep opposing hitters honest.
"'I want it to look like a fastball as much as possible,'" the Nats' '09 no.1 overall pick told reporters after the start as quoted in an AP article at ESPN.com. "'I'm not going to dump my other off-speed stuff, but I don't want them to be able to cheat on the fastball as much.'"
Strasburg faces the Cardinals today after a split-squad version of the Nationals tied St. Louis 4-4 Saturday afternoon in Jupiter, Florida's Roger Dean Stadium.
• Here's the lineup that will take the field behind Strasburg in the top of the first inning:
