Nationals select contract of 1B Greg Dobbs, option Sandy Leon to Triple-A

The Washington Nationals took three catchers on the road with them on their six-game trip to Oakland and Arizona, keeping 25-year-old backstop Sandy Leon on the roster even after Wilson Ramos returned from the Disabled List. Upon returning home, however, the Nats announced this afternoon that they were optioning Leon to Triple-A Syracuse so that the could add bench bat Greg Dobbs to the major league roster:

The Nats signed Dobbs, 35, earlier this week after the Miami Marlins designated the 11-year veteran for assignment and then ended up releasing him. Dobbs signed a 1-year/$1.7M extension with the Marlins this past winter.

In three seasons in Miami, Dobbs put up a combined .257/.304/.343 line with 24 doubles, two triples and seven home runs in 249 games and 622 plate appearances. He was 1 for 13 in 15 games with the Marlins this season.

Over the course of his career, Dobbs has a .262/.307/.388 line with 105 doubles, nine triples and 46 HRs in 938 games and 2,242 plate appearances.

Leon was called up from Double-A Harrisburg on the second day of the season after Ramos broke the hamate bone in his left hand.

Leon played in 13 games for the Nationals, going 8 for 44 (.182/.265/.273) with a double and a home run before he was optioned out today.

Additionally, the Nationals recalled outfielder 23-year-old Eury Perez from Triple-A Syracuse before placing the outfield prospect on the 60-Day DL with a left toe fracture.

In 24 games before the injury forced him from the lineup, Perez put up a .228/.304/.283 line over 103 plate appearances in which he hit three doubles and a triple.

Perez injured the toe when he fouled a ball of it in late April.

In other injured prospect news, MASN's Byron Kerr reported this morning that 2010 2nd Round pick Sammy Solis was finally getting his 2014 campaign started after a back injury suffered this spring kept him out of action:

Solis, 25, returned from Tommy John surgery last summmer to make 13 appearances, 12 as a starter for the High-A Potomac Nationals, posting a 3.43 ERA, a 3.48 FIP, 19 walks (2.97 BB/9) and 40 Ks (6.24 K/9) in 57 2/3 IP. The left-hander was talked about as a potential bullpen arm this winter before the back issues delayed the start of his fourth season with the organization after the Nats drafted him with the 51st pick of the draft in June of 2010, 49 picks after they took Bryce Harper no.1 overall.
