Game 25 WPA: I was never worried. Nats 1, Mets 0

New, 2 comments

Gio pitched his best game to date, and the rest of the Nats did the minimum necessary to turn it into a win (which turned out to be a fairly significant defense/bullpen effort, albeit a pretty danged lazy day at the plate).

Sure, it's easier to pitch from the mound and facing the plate, but Gio doesn't believe in EASY.

(What do these graphs mean?)

  • As in the old days: Gio Gonzalez (+45.3%) took his one run and made it stick, fanning 9 and walking 2 over 7 IP, giving up no runs.
  • WPA is not impressed by winning the game: Michael Taylor (-0.6%) can't reach positive WPA with his 1-5 night, despite driving in the game-winning run with an two-out RBI single in the 2nd (+11.1%).
  • WPA likes middle infielders: Your hitting WPA leaders tonight are Ian Desmond (+3.3%), who was 2-4 with a run scored, and Danny Espinosa (+5.0%), who was also 2-4.
  • Matched up: Aaron Barrett (+9.5%) gets two outs in the ayeth to earn a shutdown.
  • Delightfully undramatic: Drew Storen (+16.2%) gets a quick 1-2-3 ninth to earn a shutdown and close out the game.

Tonight's WPA brought to you by geographic certainty:
