The Washington Nationals announced their latest roster moves this afternoon after their Grapefruit League matchup with the New York Mets was cancelled due to inclement weather in Viera, Florida.
After optioning catcher Pedro Severino to Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, the Nationals this afternoon reassigned infielder Jason Martinson to Minor League camp and granted veteran outfielder Logan Schafer his unconditional release.
Martinson, 27, was 7 for 24 (.292/.433/.375) this Spring with two doubles, four walks and 11 Ks in 15 games. A 2010 5th Round pick, Martinson played for the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs in 2015, putting up a .218/.299/.380 line with 21 doubles and 19 home runs in 131 games and 559 plate appearances for the Nationals' top minor league affiliate.
Schafer, 29, signed a free agent deal with the Nationals this winter after he put up a .221/.299/.311 line with six doubles, a triple and a home run in 69 games and 143 plate appearances for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2015.
He was 4 for 20 with three walks and six Ks in eight games for the Nationals this Spring.
