Will the Washington Nationals get rained out yet again as they try to wrap up their Grapefruit League season this afternoon in the Spring finale with the New York Mets? It's a possibility.
A strong enough one that the Nationals decided to leave Max Scherzer behind in Viera to pitch in a minor league setting so that he could get his work in as he prepares for the season opener next week in Atlanta.
That means it's a bullpen day for the Nats, who send Trevor Gott to the hill at the start against Matt Harvey and the New York Mets today in Port St. Lucie, Florida's Tradition Field.
Gott, 23, is on the short list of relievers for the last spot (or two) remaining in the Opening Day bullpen, and he and the other Nationals' relievers who made the trip to the Mets' spring home will get plenty of work to showcase their talents.
Acquired from the Los Angeles Angels this winter in the trade that sent Yunel Escobar to LA, Gott, who debuted in the majors with the Angels last season, has given up six hits (two home runs), a walk and three runs in seven innings this Spring, striking out five and holding opposing hitters to a combined .231 AVG.
Here's the lineup Dusty Baker is sending out for the Grapefruit League finale, which starts at 12:10 PM EDT this afternoon:
- Ben Revere - CF
- Anthony Rendon - 3B
- Bryce Harper - RF
- Ryan Zimmerman - 1B
- Daniel Murphy - 2B
- Jayson Werth - LF
- Wilson Ramos - C
- Danny Espinosa - SS
- Trevor Gott - RHP
