Max Scherzer joined major league greats Roger Clemens, Kerry Wood and Randy Johnson on a fairly short list of the pitchers who have struck out 20 batters in a nine-inning game when he struck out twenty Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night in the nation's capital.

Scherzer tied the major league record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game, and talked to reporters afterwards about the elite company he'd joined.

"That's some serious company," Scherzer said. "It won't sink in right now, but it's an amazing accomplishment, especially to be able to get the win tonight."

While it was an historic accomplishment, Scherzer was clear that 20 K games and no-hitters are not the ultimate goal.

"This is a great thing and you just want to keep going," he said. "At the end of the day, these starts are great, and that's something that we can all remember, but really what you remember at the end of the year is if you win or not, if you win the World Series. That's the ultimate goal that everybody plays for. These games are great and we'll always remember them, but we'll always remember a World Series and that's what's important to me and I know for the rest of my teammates as well."

While Scherzer is focused on the ultimate goal, you can commemorate his accomplishment with the Scherzer 20 K t-shirt our friends at Breaking T made:
