Game 40 WPA: The return of Tony one-bag. Nats win 7-1.

Gio faded a bit toward the end, but the bullpen picked him up. Rendon and Werth seem to like the new order so far.

(What do these graphs mean?)

  • Pithy pitching comment: Gio Gonzalez (+8.0%) leaves with the bases loaded and one out in the 7th after giving up one run, striking out 5 and walking one.
  • Prodigal second baseman: Daniel Murphy (+10.6%) hits a two-out RBI single to tie the game in the third (+13.6%).
  • Visiting third baseman: Anthony Rendon (+21.2%) is 2-3 with two walks and a two-out, two-RBI single to put the Nats ahead in the 5th (+24.7%).
  • "Defuser" defuses the Giam: Felipe Rivero (+13.1%) strands Gio's runners and earns a shutdown by getting the last two outs in the 7th and the first in the aeyth.
  • Liking the two-spot: Jayson Werth (+15.0%) is 2-2 with a double, a SB, three walks, and three runs scored.
  • AVG down, OBP up: Bryce Harper (+11.0%) is 0-1 with four walks. Also, he gave one of his bats to a kid in the stands after Dan Kolko was mean to him (mean to the kid, that is)*, and that's got to be worth something.

Tonight's WPA brought to you by California youth movements of the early 80s:

*Dan Kolko was not actually mean to a kid, he just retrieved a bat Ramos flung into the stands so WIlson could use it to hit a two-out, two-RBI single in the 9th (+0.9%).
