On Sunday in the monstrosity they call Marlins Park, the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 8-2, winning the series and capping the roadtrip at 4-2.
Starter Max Scherzer was very strong again, limiting the Marlins to two runs -- on Justin Bour's sixth-inning home run. Scherzer allowed six hits in eight innings, walking none and striking out a modest (for him) eight on the afternoon. He retired 12 straight at one point and was in complete control of a decent-hitting lineup until making one mistake to Bour, letting a down-and-in changeup get just enough of the plate.
Oliver Perez and Blake Treinen combined to pitch a perfect ninth inning to close things out.
As for the offense, it was ignited from the top spot, with Ben Revere going 3 for 5 with two runs, two driven in and a pair of stolen bases, and supported from the six-hole, as Anthony Rendon continued his resurgence, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a pair of extra base hits.
The Nats (27-17) lead the N.L. East by 1 1/2 games now and come home this week to face the Mets and the Cardinals at Nationals Park.
