The St. Louis Cardinals have been something of a nemesis for the Washington Nationals since the Nats started to play winning baseball several years ago. On Sunday, the Nats clinched the season series against their rivals from the N.L. Central for the first time since 2012 as Stephen Strasburg pitched six strong innings and the Nats hit three homers in support in a 10-2 win at Nationals Park.
Strasburg wasn't as dominant in this one as he's been lately, striking out just four over six innings. But he gave up just six hits and two walks. The only run he surrendered was Brandon Moss' solo homer off a changeup in the fourth, Moss' ninth of the campaign.
The Nats answered for Strasburg's only mistake of the game in the bottom half of the inning, with Bryce Harper's single plating Michael Taylor following the leadoff double, and Wilson Ramos' two-run single a little later.
The Cards cut their deficit to 3-2 in the seventh and the Nats answered again -- in a big way. Anthony Rendon led off the frame with is fourth homer of the year off Jonathan Broxton. The Nats then loaded the bases and Jayson Werth clubbed a grand slam off lefty Dean Kiekhefer to put this one out of reach.
For fun, Ramos capped his 3 for 4 day with a two-run shot, his sixth, off Tyler Lyons in the eighth.
Strasburg moves to 9-0 on the season, matching the Cubs' Jake Arrieta for most wins in the National League.
