Washington forfeited the 17th overall pick when they signed Daniel Murphy to a 3-year/$37.5M free agent deal this winter.
That signing has worked out well so far, and the Nationals gave it up knowing that they would be receiving compensatory picks for both right-hander Jordan Zimmermann and shortstop Ian Desmond, both of whom turned down 1-year/$15.8M qualifying offers before signing with the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers, respectively.
With the picks GM Mike Rizzo and Co. in the Nationals' front office received after losing Zimmermann and Desmond, the 28th and 29th overall selections, the Nats picked high school shortstop Carter Kieboom and right-handed pitcher Dane Dunning out of the University of Florida tonight.

More information on the Nationals' top picks to follow later tonight when we'll hear from GM Mike Rizzo and Asst. GM Kris Kline.
