Game 104 WPA: So many free passes... Nats lose 3-5

The Nats almost manage double-digit walks allowed, and that's no way to win on a day when the team is running into outs and not hitting enough.

Work on the control, kid.

(What do these graphs mean?)

  • A work in progress: Reynaldo Lopez (-18.8%) shows flashes of brilliance amid terrible control as he gives up 3 runs in 4 IP with 3 Ks and 5 (five!) walks.
  • Launch pad: Anthony Rendon (+18.2%) puts the Nats ahead with a two-out, two-run bomb to just right of center in the third (+24.6%).
  • Remember me? Danny Espinosa (+1.8%) doubles in a run to give the Nats a short-lived, 3-run cushion in the 4th (+9.2%).
  • Walks are not a path to victory: Yusmeiro Petit (-10.8%) gets through 2 scoreless, but only gets two outs into his 3rd inning of work before giving up a run to put the Nats behind, leaving with runners corners in the 7th to earn a meltdown.
  • See previous comment about walks: Blake Treinen (-5.4%) walks in a run in the 7th to put the Nats behind by two, but he throws a scoreless ayeth to appease the WPA gods, avoiding a meltdown.
  • LVPs: Ben Revere (-9.9%) is 1-4 with a CS and 2 LOB. Bryce Harper (-9.6%) is 0-2 with 2 walks, a CS, and 2 LOB.
