Washington Nationals’ right fielder Jayson Werth is in the last season of his seven-year contract with the team, and he might not be wearing a uniform with a curly-W on it next season.
The 37-year-old isn’t sure yet of what his legacy is with the club, but thinks it will be decided this season based on the Nats’ level of success.
"I'm not going to call it a success just yet because I think we need to win … in the postseason for me to call it a success," Werth told reporters this week.
"I say the whole thing kind of hangs on this season,” Werth said, “there’s going to be baseball in D.C. long after I’m gone... but my career is kind of pinned to this season.”
However, fans would certainly be less ambiguous in talking about Werth’s tenure with the club, as he’s quickly gone from “overpaid outsider” to a fan favorite — which we can see in this video below of a young fan giving Jayson Werth a belated Valentine’s Day present.
The young fan gave chocolate (probably not approved by the team nutritionist Werth so infamously brought in, but there are almost certainly exceptions) and a necklace that said “Werth my love” to the Nats’ beloved right-fielder.

But she didn’t stop there: as it turns out, the superfan made valentines not just for Werth, but for the entire team, including the coaches, and all the dogs that could be considered part of the ballclub.
This isn’t the Nats’ best fan’s first rodeo sending her love to the team, though: she made easter eggs for the team last year (when easter coincided with Spring Training) and plans to make the team presents for St. Patrick’s Day. Talk about dedication!
