Last night in the nation’s capital it was the Atlanta Braves’ bullpen that faltered, with Jim Johnson giving up a three-run lead in the ninth before the Washington Nationals won it in the tenth. Nats’ skipper Dusty Baker was asked after the game if there was any satisfaction in seeing it happen to someone else for a change after the Nationals’ bullpen has struggled this season.
“No, not really,” Baker said, “it was just gratifying for us to get the win. That was a two-game game, because we would have been seven— if we had lost that game, we would have been seven [ahead in the division] instead of nine, you know, and we’ve got two games to go and hopefully we can extend this lead and take a break. We’ve had that happen to us many, many times, and so we’ve done that to a few teams as well, but people seem to forget the times that we do it and just remember the times that they do it to us.”
The losses do hurt more, it’s true. But the wins like last night’s, those are the ones that fans remember...
