Dusty Baker summed up what Sean Doolittle does that’s led to his success as a reliever after an appearance by the left-hander during the recent trip to Houston, TX. Doolittle, who’s saved 13 games in 13 opportunities since joining the Nationals, has provided the current NL East division leaders with exactly what they needed since he was acquired in a pre-deadline deal with the Oakland A’s.
“Doo throws strikes,” Baker told reporters. “He throws near-strikes that look like strikes and end up being balls. He has great command and good velocity.”

Doolittle also has a 2.84 ERA and a .229/.276/.329 line against in 19 innings pitched with Washington.

The guy comes right at you,” Nats’ GM Mike Rizzo told 106.7 the FAN in D.C.’s Sports Junkies a few weeks back when discussing Doolittle’s approach. “He’s no-nonsense.”
“Doolittle has been great for us,” Rizzo said, “and I like the way he goes after guys and attacks the strike zone and is kind of, ‘Here it is, fellas,’ and my best against your best and see who wins.”
Fans in the nation’s capital have cottoned to their new closer quickly.
The sound of them cheering “DOOOOOO!” when he takes the mound in the ninth at home in Nationals Park is definitely becoming a thing this season, and Doolittle said recently that he loves hearing it when he’s out there doing his job.
His teammates appreciate what he’s done too, as Anthony Rendon let the left-hander know during the series with the Astros in Minute Maid Park:
