Washington Nationals’ Max Scherzer covering adoption fees to help clear space for animals impacted by Hurricane Harvey

If you’ve ever wanted to add a Nats-loving hund to your family, TODAY IS YOUR H*CKIN DAY

Max and Erica May Scherzer, D.C.’s number one power couple, are strong advocates in their own right, especially for everyone’s favorite four-legged friends.

So, as they saw Hurricane Harvey devastate the Houston area, they realized that there were going to be a lot of abandoned and lost dogs and cats needing shelter space — even here in D.C. at the Humane Rescue Alliance.

With that in mind, the two decided to help the Humane Rescue Alliance make some space, and donated enough money for all adoption fees to be waived at the shelter’s locations.

“Adoption fees range from $85 up to about $200 depending on the animal and the age of the animal,” said Stephanie Shain, CEO of the Humane Rescue Alliance, as quoted by FOX 5 News D.C.. “But Erica and Max have pledged because they know how important it is we get these kennels empty and they are going to cover those adoption fees.”

That brings us to your part: If you were even remotely considering adopting a puppy, kitten, dog, cat, or really anything, this weekend — Friday to Sunday — is a great time to do that, because it’ll be free — and you’ll help make some space for the animals that desperately need it.

Also, if you do adopt an animal this weekend, you’re semi-legally required to name it after the Nationals in some way, shape, or form. Suggested names include “Harper,” “Dusty,” “Budweiser Beer Pen TM,” “Dooo,” and “Blue Eye.”
