With Adam Eaton unavailable, and now on the 10-Day Disabled list, first-year skipper Davey Martinez has been mixing things up at the top of the Washington Nationals’ lineup.

Martinez talked earlier this week about what he’d seen from Brian Goodwin, after the Nats’ 27-year-old outfielder went 1 for 3 with an RBI single, walk, and a run scored in a 4-1 win over the Atlanta Braves.

Martinez told reporters he liked what he saw.

“He worked his walks,” Martinez said.

“I think he had like three at bats where he was in 3-2 counts, as a leadoff hitter that’s what you’d like to do, and I really liked it. Got a big hit for us, but he had good at bats.”

Goodwin was back on top in the finale with the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, going 0 for 2 with a walk in what ended up a 5-3 loss in extra innings.

“Right now he’s working walks,’ Martinez said after yesterday’s game. “I know he lined out hard, but I like him up there, I really do, and I also like Trea [Turner], so like I said, we’ll kind of play around with it, and mix and match here and there but I like them both up there.”

In something of a breakout season in 2017, when he got more time in the majors than he had before due to injuries to the Nationals’ outfielders, Goodwin took advantage of the opportunity, posting a .251/.313/.498 line with 21 doubles and 13 home runs in 74 games and 278 plate appearances, over which he was worth 0.5 fWAR.

Through 12 games this season, Goodwin is 6 for 23 (.261/.400/.391) with a home run, five walks, and 10 Ks in 31 PAs.

Turner’s leading off for the Nationals tonight, however, and Martinez has Matt Adams in left with Michael A. Taylor in center, so Goodwin’s going to be coming off the bench should he be needed.
