Washington Nationals’ skipper Davey Martinez told reporters last night that catcher Matt Wieters would have an MRI on his left leg after he injured it on the way to first while running out a single in the series opener in Arizona, but before they knew the extent of the damage to Wieters’ hamstring Martinez said they would need to bring another catcher up.

He wasn’t interested in diagnosing what went wrong for Wieters on the trip from home to first base.

“I think it’s his hammy,” Martinez said, “but we’re going to get an MRI tomorrow, it’s the back of his knee.”

“We’re thinking it’s probably hamstring, but it’s kind of in the back of the connection point of where there’s some other things running in there,” Wieters told reporters, as quoted by MASN”s Mark Zuckerman.

“So we just want to make sure. Hopefully it is hamstring, and hopefully it’s not too bad. And we’ll see what steps are next.”

This afternoon, the Nationals announced that Wieters was being placed on the 10-Day DL with what a press release on the move said was a left hamstring strain.

Spencer Kieboom was called up to take Wieters’ spot on the roster, and since Wieters and Pedro Severino were the only catchers on the 40-Man as of last night, the Nationals had to make another move, placing Adam Eaton, who had surgery on his ankle yesterday, on the 60-Day DL.

Kieboom, 27, is a 2015 Nationals’ 7th Round pick, who made his MLB debut late last season, and has put up a .250/.337/.333 line with four doubles and a home run in 25 games and 95 plate appearances with Triple-A Syracuse this season.

Kieboom will back up Pedro Severino, who has gotten significant starts this season after he was optioned to Triple-A out of Spring Training and called up when Wieters landed on the DL with an oblique issue in early April.
