Washington Nationals’ lineup for series opener with San Diego Padres: Ryan Zimmerman out again...

Ryan Zimmerman missed the last two games with a stiff side, and he’s out again tonight for the Nationals’ series opener with the Padres?

Ryan Zimmerman was on deck as the Washington Nationals rallied in the ninth inning of the series finale with the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, but Nats’ skipper Davey Martinez went with Pedro Severino instead, in a bases-loaded, no-out opportunity.

Zimmerman missed Saturday’s game, and didn’t end up being used on Sunday, after he injured his side diving for a ball by first base and landing fairly hard.

Severino took a bases-loaded walk that forced in the tying run before Wilmer Difo’s walk-off single won it for the Nationals.

“I really didn’t want him to hit,” Martinez told reporters when asked about Zimmerman being up but not going to the plate.

“He said he still felt a little stiff, and I thought [Severino] works good at bats, I really do, and I thought bases loaded he could work a pretty good at bat and he really did.”

Zimmerman finished the homestand against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Philadelphia Phillies 6 for 28 (.214/.241/.464) with a double and two home runs, leaving him with a .194/.256/.398 line, three doubles, two triples, and five home runs over 31 games and 117 plate appearances this season.

Martinez talked before Sunday’s game about how Zimmerman was feeling after sitting out with the stiff side the previous night.

“I talked to him, he said he felt better still a little sore,” Martinez explained. “Like more of a bruise kind of a deal, so he’s going to keep me updated for today if he’s available, but he said he feels a lot better, so he’s shooting for tomorrow, but if it’s an emergency, he said he might be able to play.”

Though he understands that Zimmerman will want back in, Martinez said he is ultimately responsible for deciding what’s best for everyone involved.

“These guys understand — they want to play,” Martinez said, “... so they’ll come and I know when they’re hiding stuff, so — and that’s part of having communication with them every day. Howie [Kendrick] today, wanted to play, and I told him, ‘Hey, you need a day. We’ve got to give you a day to keep you fresh, healthy, keep your legs good,’ and so he’s getting today, and I think having Difo helps us do things like that, so I want to make sure these guys are fresh for the whole season, not just for right now.”

Zimmerman is out of the lineup again tonight. Martinez will likely be asked about Zim’s absence in tonight’s pregame press conference...
