Davey Martinez told reporters before last night’s series opener in San Diego’s Petco Park that he was taking a wait and see approach with first baseman Ryan Zimmerman before reinserting the veteran first baseman.

Zimmerman injured his side landing hard on a diving play in the Nationals’ series opener with the Philadelphia’s Phillies, and he’s now missed three games.

“I just want to make sure he’s feeling really good,” Martinez said.

“He’s going to go out and do all the baseball activities and then we’ll go from there. I’m glad he’s feeling better, it’s one of those things where you just don’t know. He hit the ground pretty hard and his back was stiff, and everything is stiff, so to give him another day is nice.”

Zimmerman told reporters, as quoted by MASN’s Mark Zuckerman, that he felt good after giving his side time to heal up.

“Today feels really, really good,” Zimmerman said. “Two days ago, it was really sore. It was just multiple things. Yesterday was better than the day before, which was a good sign.”

Matt Adams, who has started at first in the last three games with Zimmerman unavailable, has been on a tear at the plate, with seven home runs in his last seven games, including a two-homer game last night against the Padres.

Though one of his two home runs last night was off left-handed reliever, Matt Strahm, he’s sruggled to hit lefties in his career.

It’s hard to take his bat out of the lineup right now, however, so Martinez said he would have a look at the numbers and make a decision on how to line things up.

“He’s swinging the bat well,” Martinez explained, “and we’ll see how he matches up against these next two guys, and definitely play him against one of the two, or maybe both. But I’ll have to sit and look.”

Martinez’s final decison? Zimmerman is back in and playing first base and Adams in in left field against the Padres.
