Stephen Strasburg took another step towards returning from the latest DL stint, for a cervical nerve impingement in his neck, throwing a 64-pitch bullpen session he told Nationals’ manager Davey Martinez ended up going well.
“Apparently he felt really good,” Martinez told reporters before Saturday’s game.
“He walked off and said, ‘I feel good. Real good.’ So we’ll go with that.”
Washington’s received solid outings from their starters in recent weeks, but a healthy and rested Strasburg back in the Nats’ rotation down the stretch could be a significant boost.
“We’re at a critical moment right now,” Martinez acknowledged, “...so when we get him back we need him back. We can’t have any setbacks. So we want to make sure that when he does get back he’s going to pitch every five days.”
