At some point last night Jonny Venters’ name showed up on MLB.com’s Transactions page.

The veteran left-hander was listed as going on the 10-Day Injured List (retroactive to July 8th), though there were no details on what led to the move.

Venters, 34, fought his way back to the majors in 2018 following three and a half Tommy John surgeries, and signed with the Nationals in late-May this year after he was released by the Atlanta Braves in the middle of the month.

The official announcement on the move added the details of the issue which the Nationals said was left shoulder strain.

Venters who was released by the Braves after giving up nine hits, eight walks, and 13 runs (9 ER), in nine games and 4 2⁄3 innings before he went in the IL, gave up three hits, two walks, and three runs, two of them earned, in 3 13 IP after the Nationals called him up in late June.

Replacing Venters in the bullpen is right-hander Kyle McGowin, who’s coming up for the third time this season after giving up 14 hits, two walks, and 12 runs, 11 earned, in 10 IP in three appearances and one start in his previous stints in the majors in 2019.

In 11 games at Triple-A Fresno this season, the 27-year-old has started exclusively, going (7-2) with a 4.15 ERA, 17 walks, and 68 Ks in 60 23 IP, with the Nats noting, in their press release on today’s moves, that, “McGowin capped the season’s first half strong, tossing 7.0 shutout innings with seven strikeouts and five hits allowed on July 4 vs. Tacoma (SEA).”
