This time around in the 2019 MLB HR Derby, there is $2.5M in prize money available, with a $1M bonus going to this year’s winner. Starting at 8:00 PM EDT tonight on ESPN, Oakland A’s infielder Matt Chapman; Toronto Blue Jays’ outfielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Houston Astros’ infielder Alex Bregman, Los Angeles Dodgers’ outfielder Joc Pederson, New York Mets’ first baseman Pete Alonso, Cleveland Indians’ first baseman Carlos Santana, Pittsburgh Pirates’ first baseman Josh Bell, and Atlanta Braves’ outfielder Ronald Acuña, Jr. will battle it out in what’s derisively referred to as glorified batting practice.
C’mon, it’s like a totally thrilling event with drama and intrigue and afterwards we can all act like Chicago Cubs fans and complain about how the rules of the Derby weren’t really strictly adhered to...
It’s weird this time around with no Washington Nationals participating in the Derby or in the Midsummer Classic on Tuesday, though Max Scherzer will represent the Nats in Cleveland, Ohio’s Progressive Field.
