The Washington Nationals, as manager Davey Martinez said after last night’s loss, ran into a buzzsaw in Philadelphia Phillies’ starter Aaron Nola, who held the visiting club off the board through eight innings in which he allowed just two hits and three walks.

“He kept us off-balance all night, and when you’ve got a guy like that, that can do that, it’s pretty tough,” Martinez said.

Maybe the most impressive part: Nola held the Nats’ previously red-hot duo at the top of the order hitless, with Trea Turner and Juan Soto going a combined 0 for 6 with two Ks (and two walks).

“He got two of our hottest hitters out,” Martinez added, “... and they’ve been swinging the bats really well, so when I’m watching the game and I see him locating his changeups and breaking balls, and throwing his fastballs where he wants, he was good.”

Patrick Corbin put together a solid outing of his own, holding the Phillies to two runs on five hits in five innings of work, but even he was impressed with Nola.

“He’s tough. He’s tough on our hitters,” Corbin said. “He’s a really good pitcher, and yeah, I mean, he had a great game tonight, made it through eight innings, kept our guys off-balance, to hold us to zero runs is pretty impressive and I think two hits up to the point where he came out. When he’s on his game he’s one of the best in the game.”

Up next for the Nationals, a meeting with Philly righty Zack Wheeler, who’s posted a 2.58 ERA, 3.32 FIP, seven walks, 23 Ks, and a .257/.302/.357 line against in 38 13 IP this season.

Martinez’s message for his club after last night’s loss?

“We’ve got go keep our heads up, we’ve got to stick together, and come back tomorrow and play good, clean baseball,” he said last night.

“We’ve got to play clean baseball, come back tomorrow, try to get on the board early. We’ve got to try to get on the board early and put the pressure on the other team.”

“We’ve got to forget about it, we’ve got to come back tomorrow, we can’t do nothing about the past, so let’s focus on tomorrow and go 1-0 tomorrow.”
