Washington Nationals’ lineup for 2nd of 3 with the Miami Marlins in D.C.

Davey Martinez’s club didn’t put any runs on the board against Miami Marlins’ starter Pablo López, who tossed seven scoreless in last night’s series opener, or either of the first two of three relievers who came out of the bullpen for the Fish, but the Washington Nationals won it on a walk-off home run by Kyle Schwarber in the bottom of the tenth inning. So, yeah, it’s results over process this time?

Miami brought the runner on second in extras around for the first run of the game for either team, but the home team responded in the bottom of the tenth inning, with Schwarber just flat crushing a 96 MPH, 0-1 fastball from reliever Yimi García and hitting the walk-off winner some 454 feet to right in Nationals Park.

Playing for the tie is so overrated.

“At that moment, that’s that 10th inning where it’s hard — you think about it, I know you’re trying to play for a run to tie the game, but you’ve got a guy that can hit a ball just like that,” Martinez said.

“So, I told him to go up there and take a swing and see what happens, typical Schwarber, he hits one 400 feet.”

Uh, 454 feet, skipper.

“He’s just trying to make hard contact right there. That’s all I ask from these guys. They know that.

“I tell him, he’s a guy — I had a good conversation with him before the game, I said, ‘You’re a guy that if you hit the ball hard, more times than not if you hit the ball in the air it’s going to go a long way. So don’t try to do too much, just go up there and just try to make contact and see what happens,’ and obviously you see when he hits the ball hard and can get the ball elevated, he hits the ball far.”

“Obviously it’s nice to come up in that spot and deliver,” Schwarber said in his own post game Zoom call with reporters.

“That wasn’t my intention. My intention was to — obviously I wanted to drive him in, but secondary option there is to make sure he gets over.”

“That was kind of the biggest deal here, trying to get him over to third base,” the veteran outfielder added.

“That’s the primary focus, but obviously when the ball went into the stands, it’s a good feeling to know that we got a walk-off win right there.”

It wasn’t an ideal night for the offense, but they got it done in the end.

“We hit some balls hard right at the guys,” Martinez said. “But our at bats were good. We swung the bats well in Toronto [Dunedin], so today was just one of those days. We ended up getting a big hit when we needed it, and we came back and won that game, so let’s just keep it going tomorrow and go 1-0 tomorrow.”
