Davey Martinez’s club dropped 5 of 6 on their recently-completed road trip and they’ve lost 9 of their last 10 games overall. Martinez talked after their 5-4, walk-off loss to the New York Mets in the series finale in Citi Field, about the process the Washington Nationals are going through after kicking off an organizational reboot at the July 30th trade deadline.
“You know what, it’s going to be a learning process for a lot of these guys, and that’s what you’re seeing,” the fourth-year skipper said.
“The one good thing I can say about them is they’re playing hard, they feel like they’re in every game which we are, and it’s just going to be a learning process with them.
“One or two bad pitches today, or one or two good pitches the other way, we win the ballgame, so we just got to keep battling.”
Martinez’s team rallied with three in the top of the seventh in the second game of the Nats and Mets’ doubleheader on Thursday, tying it up at 4-4 before Pete Alonso’s walk-off home run won it for the home team.
Nationals’ starter Erick Fedde talked after giving up six hits, a walk, and two earned runs in four innings in the second seven-inning game, about the mood in the clubhouse as they’ve struggled over the last few weeks.
“It’s never fun losing ballgames,” Fedde said.
“I think it’s tough, not a good feeling post game in the clubhouse, but I still think we have a lot of guys who are excited to go out and prove themselves and try to make a name I guess you could say, so it makes the lead-up to games enjoyable, just hopefully the end result gets a little better.”
What will the end result be tonight, in the series opener with the Braves in D.C.?
